A New Sound System at The Groucho Club

Carefully curated after extensive trials across a range of configurations, styles and brands to achieve the ideal visual and sonic experience.

The Groucho Club sound system brings together classic British loudspeaker heritage with modern professional audio engineering, designed to deliver both precision listening and powerful musical impact.

At the centre of the system is a unique pair of 12 inch dual concentric loudspeakers from Tannoy. Renowned for their point source design, they deliver exceptional coherence, imaging and detail, presenting music with clarity and natural balance across the mid and high frequencies.

Note: The 12 inch Tannoy drivers are more than capable of delivering substantial bass performance within a domestic environment. In this instance however a dedicated low frequency extension was introduced, both to increase bass impact and to optimise HF positioning at a more appropriate listening height.

Low frequency reinforcement is provided by a pair of bespoke walnut bass reflex subwoofer cabinets from Funktion-One, finished with burnt orange fascias and gold grilles. Customisation was carried out in house by Project Audio, ensuring the finish complements the wider aesthetic language of the space. These 18 inch enclosures deliver deep controlled extension while remaining seamlessly integrated with the Tannoy system to preserve tonal balance and rhythmic precision.

System crossover alignment and dynamics are managed by an NST Audio processor, ensuring precise phase coherence and consistent performance throughout the room. Amplification is supplied by Full Fat Audio FFA HD amplifier units, providing high power, clarity and headroom with the character of a large scale hi-fi system within a professional framework.

Within the signal path sits a Rupert Neve Designs Master Bus Transformer, introducing subtle analogue depth and harmonic richness that enhances presence and realism without compromising clarity.

Further into the room, a pair of Tannoy Autograph Mini loudspeakers operate as room delay fill, extending the sound field while maintaining tonal consistency throughout the space. In the DJ booth, a second pair of Tannoy Autograph Mini speakers are powered by a Leak Stereo 230 amplifier and independently controlled, allowing the DJ to monitor the same sonic signature experienced on the floor while also providing a precise high fidelity reference for music selection.

The second room features a pair of legendary Tannoy Kensington loudspeakers, widely regarded as one of the most accomplished loudspeaker designs ever produced and a true icon of British audio craftsmanship. They are positioned on custom acoustically engineered walnut riser plinths by Project Audio, designed to optimise HF alignment at the ideal listening height.

The result is a system that combines refinement, precision and scale, capable of revealing the finest musical detail while delivering powerful yet controlled dance floor energy when required.
